Dr. Salim Ali, renowned ornithologist of India had set up Thattekkad bird sanctuary in the year 1983. So it is also known as Dr. Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary, located at distance of 20 kilometers from Kothamangalam on the Kochi – Munnar route in Idukki district. It is between the tributaries of Periyar River and occupies the catchments area of the Bhoothathankettu Dam.

The Aralam Wildlife Sanctuary, northern most wildlife sanctuary of Kerala, is located about 35 km from Thalasseri and 60 km from Kannur. Spread over 55 sq km, the elevation of the sanctuary varies from 50 meters to 1145 meters. It lies adjacent to three other sanctuaries of Nagarhole, Bandipur and Mudumala. Established in the year 1973, the sanctuary comes under project Elephant which was launched in 1991 to save the elephant population.
