Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary, covers an area of 92 sq.km is located on the Munnar-Udumalpet road in Idukki district. The Sanctuary abounds in a variety of trees, including the unique thorny scrub forest with Xerophytic species. It is home to the endangered species of the Giant grizzled squirrel.
As one travels deep into the forest, one can spot elephants, spotted deer, sambar, hanuman langur and even peacocks. A number of reptiles like vipers, kraits, cobras, pythons, etc. can also be found here. Deciduous forests, dry thorny forest, riparian types, sholas, and grasslands add to the beauty of the Sancturay.
Extensive Marayoor sandal forest and the beautiful Thoovanam waterfalls are located here. The Sanctuary gets less rain, so it is whole year tourist destination.
